Playing God

Cut down in the prime of its life.Suz and I were saying our last goodbyes to summer on the weekend when we made an unfortunate discovery. We were busy packing our patio furniture away and raking leaves in the balmy weather when we had to say goodbye to something else as well - our Trumpet vine.

Our neighbour had a massive trumpet vine growing up a trellis last summer and it climbed over the fence to our side. We loved it, and enjoyed its massive amount privacy for the summer. When summer ended, so did our neighbour's love affair with the pretty plant. She decided it had to go.

Our neighbour is very generous. From her we have received bottles of wine, mini-bar bottles of Vodka, pumpkin pie, and many a plant.

When she dug up her trumpet vine, she offered part of it to us. We loved it, so we accepted the small bit of root. She asked us not to plant it near her trellis, and we agreed. We planted it at the back of our yard, against our fence.

For the rest of the summer, the little trumpet vine grew and grew. We were happy. One day it would grow as big as tree, and our yard would fill with the happiest hummingbirds , elves and wood sprites. We would trap them, and sell their taxidermied carcasses on eBay.

But it was not to be. Our neighbour, ripping out a dump truck's worth of dead Morning Glory growing on our shared fence, came into our yard to finish her work. She spotted the trumpet vine at the back of our yard, and with a quick snip, snip, stole the life of the plant she gave to us.

The trumpet vine was dead. And I couldn't even yell at my neighbour, because she was the one who gave that plant to us. And because I feared her power. And because I'm not entirely sure the trumpet vine is dead. We'll find out next summer.

that is one strange story. i'm utterly confused by your neighbor. hmmm. i agree with aims, i hope it grows back.

HOWEVER, I AM INcREDIBLY jealous! we have snow and it is -1 FARENHEIT here! you are enjoying the end of your fall, and your grass is still somewhat green, we are WHITE WHITE WHITE and VERY cold!

it was in the back of the yard not anywhere near her home, point 1. point 2, she came into your yard and killed it? hon, i be careful. for real, she might be a little of her rocker.

and i know how tricky it is when it comes to neighbour things but you are the most friendly and tacktful guy on earth. i know you could approach her with million question marks taped to your body and ask her why. there has to be a reason, as wrong as it is, she needs to explain. and be careful.

good luck and i'm very sorry..and balmy weather???lol..hon, we are in a deep freeze and have been for days. -41 with windchill and deaths and all..today evening we will all dance happyly for it is going up to -17, whoo-hooo..;)

enjoy the weather friend. and i'm sorry for you and Suz and your beautiful vine.

Wow, I'm sorry to hear about the deep freeze everyone is in. The temp was around 20C. the day I took that photo (Monday). I cut the lawn one last time, and I was even too hot for my sweater.

Since then the temp has started to decline, and I hope it stops before it reaches the depths that you are all seeing!

Aren't you SUPPOSED to trim these vines back at tthe end of the year? We do that to all of ours each fall.

She probably came in and gave teh vine the snip snip it needs to generate life for next spring, unlike those heartless owners she gave teh clippings to, that left the dead and dying carcass to wither, err... on the vine, as the saying goes.

I butcher the roses every year so they'll come back big and strong. Maybe she's trying to help. That or she's seen how well it's doing on your side of the fence and is envious of all your hummingbird visitors. Or she had a hummingbird phobia?
